So I got the new Tesseract EP
Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
I’m sure some will like “Perspective”. But I just can’t stand the new Mr Whiney Whinerson manning the microphone. Especially compared to the power and passion of Daniel’s voice.
I know, I know, it has all been said, he left the band, it’s time to move on. But the thing is, I got used to Pink Floyd without Waters, because Gilmour sang most songs live. And I was okay with Fear Factory without Wolbers and Herrera, because it actually made an awesome lineup which recorded their best album since Obsolete. And - blasphemy warning! - I prefer AC/DC with Johnson.
Megadeth aren’t Megadeth without Marty, but it kinda works. Same goes for the Portnoy / Mangini situation in Dream Theater. But replacing Dan with Elliot is like pouring vomit onto salad instead of vinegret. Yes, they both start with V but aren’t quite the same thing. Sorry, Elliot. Maybe you’re a good singer, I haven’t heard your other stuff. But your voice sure as hell does not fit in with Tesseract.
At first I was going to write that the only song where Elliot sounds kinda okay was Eden 2.0, but it just isn’t. It’s just louder than the other songs and the vocals stand out less. Maybe it would have been different if the band actually spent more time putting new stuff together and recorded a new album with brand new songs. But releasing that EP just makes it too damn easy to compare the two singers. We all know these songs too well. I know Dan’s voice too well. I don’t need an iPod, I can play the whole “One” in my head. And he ruins it all.
This is one of these cases where the singer leaving breaks the band rather than just starting a new chapter in their history. I was giving them the benefit of a doubt, even after hearing “Dream Brother” earlier this year. Now that I have listened to Perspective… no more.
I am getting so emotional over this, because when I first heard “Concealing Fate”, I was all like “sh*t, this is EXACTLY what my last band was supposed to be like. That’s the exact mixture of prog/djent, melodies, heaviness, feeling, lyrics I had in mind!” I couldn’t believe someone actually pulled it off, they must have spent quite some time in my head.
So the most promising band of the last few years - at least in my head - just flopped to the ground, and I don’t see buying their next album or even bothering to listen to it more than once.
Well, alright, I may be buying the Deluxe version of the EP in the future (instrumental versions FTW!) but for now I’ll go sulk in the corner.
